Mvuu Camp - inside the enclosure July 24th, 2009

Liwonde National Park has seen several changes in their animal population. Lions have not been seen in the park in the past few years although they are sometimes heard. Black Rhinos have been introduced and are successfully breeding and increasing in numbers.

For our final safari we chose to go inside the Rhino enclosure with the hopes of seeing one of the 12 rhinos. This may sound like a visit to the zoo, until you realize that the enclosure is about 40 square miles. The enclosure not only keeps the rhinos in, but keeps the elephants out and controls the impala population, which can over graze.

We were not successful in seeing any rhinos, but did see
Zebra - they were very shy

Impala

Sable

They were nearly exterminated because their manes are used to make sable brushes. Thankfully, their numbers are increasing. They are beautiful - click on the picture and you can see his hitchhiker.

This video gives you an idea of the jeep ride in the park - watch the driver's hands :-)

We had lunch in the dining room and were back on the boat at 2pm to meet Ken and Mphatso at the dock to head to our next stop - Luther Cottege on Lake Malawi.
